NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY

Bay Area Newborn and Maternity Photographer - www.aimeepoolphoto.com

Aimee’s Style

I believe in capturing beauty that is pure and simple and this is my approach to photography. I specialize  natural and organic newborn, maternity and motherhood portraiture.

I am most passionate about organic motherhood photography. I love to capture the precious bond and connection between a mother and her child.  I like the focus to be on the the moment that I am capturing and not on a prop. I prefer to capture moments shared between mom and baby as opposed to a posed portrait. I will do everything that I can to create a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere so that we can capture the realness of who you and your child are.

What you can expect:
a safe and comfortable newborn studio.
Womb like posing
Soft textures with neutral coors

What my style is not:
I do not pose newborns in awkward un-natural posing.
I do not use bright and distracting colors.
I am a minimalist when it comes to props.

What to look for in a Newborn Photographer?

Choosing a newborn photographer can be overwhelming. You’re handing over your brand new baby to someone you’ve just met so make sure that you do your research.

Now days it seems that there are so many people carrying around nice cameras and starting up photography businesses with very little experience. When selecting a newborn and maternity photographer I encourage you to choose carefully. The memories that you will capture during these fleeting moments of life are ones that you will cherish for a lifetime and you will want to make sure that they are captured by a professional.

Things to consider, how long a photographer has been in business professionally? Does the photographer have a defined style that you love or is their work all over the place? When you look through their website blog and Facebook page do any images look blurry or out of focus?  You want to be able to see the sweet details of your baby’s face from their eyelashes to their little lips.  Are the photos too bright/overexposed do they look too dark or under exposed? Do the images look grainy or muddy? Do the newborns look like they are comfortable or are they posed unsafely or awkwardly? You will want to hire a professional photographer that knows how take technically correct images so that when you make professional prints they will look beautiful. You You will also want to hire a photographer that will pose your baby naturally and comfortably keeping their safety as the top priority.

Experience, Experience, Experience!

I cannot stress enough how important it is to make sure that your newborn photographer is experienced. Posing newborns should be done with the upmost safety in mind and it takes years of experience to learn how to correctly pose newborn babies. Just as your would carefully select your OBGYN or Midwife you will want to take the same care when choosing a newborn photographer. Find out how long they have been in business professionally, do they have a clean and professional newborn studio, are they bonded and insured, do they have a business license?

Ask questions. How long have you been working with newborns? How many newborns have you photographed? Where did you learn how to pose and soothe newborns? There are a lot of amazing newborn workshops out there and they should be able to tell you where they gained their experience.

Are they charging professional prices?

One of the best ways to spot a newbie photographer is by their prices. If the photographer is experienced and they are running a professional business by paying taxes, they are bonded and insured, they have a professional studio they will not be offering a newborn session for $300 for all of the digital files. I know that keeping costs down is important to every family but when it comes to your newborn baby make sure that the photographer that will be in charge of their safety and your families memories is experienced.

F A Q ‘ s

.

What age are the newborns on your site?

Most newborns you see are between 5 and 10 days old. Photographing newborns in the first 1-2 weeks of life is preferable in order to achieve the sleepy little different squishy poses.

When should I schedule my newborn session?

While you are still pregnant it best! I can’t stress this enough. Contact me ASAP and I’ll pencil in your due date. Of course, very seldom are babies actually born on their due date, so please contact me as soon as your baby comes! We will work around your little one’s arrival. Generally, I will be able to fit you in in the first 10 days , as long as I hear from you within the first 24-48 hours.

 –

How soon after my baby is born should I contact you?

ASAP! Please contact me within the first 24-48 hours to ensure a session date and time within the first 10 days. Because of the nature of these sessions, I leave my weekdays as open as I can for my clients who are due. However, I do take last minute sessions if I have a day available. If you are a client that has booked your session in advance, it is important to contact me ASAP to secure your date and time. Otherwise, any available time will possibly be given to a last minute client.

How long will the session last?

Newborn sessions typically last around from 2-3 hours and very rarely, even longer. Please allow for at least 4 hours after your session starts. Refrain from booking any other appointments that day if you can. Some babies really need the extra time and I don’t want you to ever feel rushed!

Do you supply props?

Yes. I supply everything we need for your newborn session.
This includes crates, baskets and bowls as well as headbands, hats, wraps and handmade knit outfits.

What should we {the parents} wear and should we bring outfits for our newborn?

Newborns are absolute perfection when they wear nothing at all! However, I do have a variety of hats, headbands, wrap, pants etc. My style favors natural tones like cream, white, tan, peach etc. If you plan on bringing hats etc, I would love for you to send me pictures ahead of time so I can make sure they fit in with my natural style.

There are few things as stunning as skin-on-skin shots of a newborn and the proud parents. Dad can be shirtless for some shots (or in a tight fitting neutral shirt). Mom can wear a strapless top or tank top. Images for this type of shot are generally closely cropped. Solid colors are key and I tend to prefer soft neutrals. I have an beautiful wardrobe available for moms at the studio. Most moms decide to take advantage of the studio wardrobe.
